Hosted by George Mason University, the GMDI is one of the largest debate summer camps in Virginia. We offer casual and competitive classes for rising 6-12 graders in policy debate. With small class sizes, a dedicated teaching staff, and lots of experience, the GMDI is the place to be in 2024! The GMDI's motto, modeled after George Mason University, is "Innovation is Tradition." The institute aims to foster skills development in many areas, including in-depth research, critical thinking, persuasion, argumentation, and overall communication.

What is the difference between casual and competitive debate?

Our casual debate classes are meant for students who have zero debate experience and do not intend on joining a debate team. If your student needs public speaking experience or a fun intellectual activity, this is great for them!

Our competitive debate classes are meant for students with any level of experience who plan on joining a debate team and want learn and train their debate skills to be more successful at tournaments. If your student wants a challenging, but fun, learning environment, this is great for them!
